Wasp nest removal in Tilburg: spotting a nest
Every wasp nest starts small in spring: a papery ball no bigger than a ping-pong ball, built by the queen on her own. Over the summer it grows into a colony of hundreds or even thousands of workers, and the later in the season it gets, the more fiercely they defend it.
Signs that a nest is in or near your home:
- wasps flying in a straight line to and from the same crack or hole
- rustling or crackling inside a cavity wall, shed wall or loft boarding
- wasps indoors even though the windows have stayed shut
- a grey, layered nest under an overhang, in a bird box or among stored belongings
Wasp, bee, bumblebee or hornet?
Before we do anything, we work out which insect you are dealing with. That decides the approach, and sometimes no action is needed at all.
- Wasps: slim, bright yellow and black with an obvious waist; pushy around sweet food and drinks in late summer.
- Honey bees: smaller, brownish and slightly hairy; they shuttle to and from flowers and rarely sting.
- Bumblebees: plump, round and furry, often with a white or orange tail; very peaceable.
- Hornets: clearly bigger than a wasp. The Asian hornet is dark with yellow legs; the European hornet is reddish brown and yellow.
How our wasp nest removal works
During the inspection we find the entry point and work out where the nest itself sits. That is often not where you see the wasps: behind a gap in the façade, the nest may hang some way off inside the cavity. In a cavity wall, wasp nest removal is mostly about getting the product to exactly the right spot.
When we handle wasps as part of our pest control in Tilburg, we prefer to treat towards evening, when traffic at the entrance dies down and the colony is home. A professional product goes into the opening or directly onto the nest so that it reaches every wasp. A nest hanging freely in a shrub or shed can usually be taken down afterwards.
Bee nest removal in Tilburg
We do not exterminate honey bees: they matter for pollination. A cluster of bees hanging from a branch, fence or wall in spring or early summer is usually a swarm looking for somewhere to settle. A beekeeper (imker) can collect it, and we will help you find the right person.
If there is a bee nest inside a cavity wall or chimney, we look at the options and, where needed, refer you to a beekeeper. Bumblebees are best left in peace where possible: their nests stay small and are abandoned by the end of the season. Mason bees, which nest in old mortar joints, are harmless too and only active for a few weeks in spring.
Hornet nest removal in Tilburg
The Asian hornet is spreading across the Netherlands and is also being seen in Brabant. In spring the queen starts a small nest under a canopy, in a shed or against a window frame. Later in summer the colony often moves to a large, round nest high in a tree, which tends to be spotted only once the leaves drop. Always report an Asian hornet on waarneming.nl so that its spread can be tracked.
The European hornet is a native species. It builds in hollow trees, large nest boxes, cavity walls or a quiet loft, and is calmer than its reputation suggests, though its sting is painful. Never try to take down a hornet nest yourself: we treat it wearing protective clothing and with the right kit, at height if necessary.
Preventing a new nest
Wasps do not reuse an old nest, but next spring a young queen will happily pick a similar spot. A few small measures make your home and garden less inviting:
- once the nest is dead, fit a vent grille in the open joint and seal the gap under the roof tile
- fit fine mesh behind the vents of your loft and shed
- check the summer house, shed and bird boxes in April and May for a small starter nest
- cover sweet food, fruit and cans of fizzy drink on the patio
Found gnaw marks or large droppings while clearing out the shed? Then have it checked for rodents too; read more about rat control.
